Spring JPA: One to One Mapping: Using Foreign Key

In One-to-One mapping, tables are associated with each other based on exactly one matching row.

We can create One-to-One mapping in three approaches.
a.   Using a foreign key in either of the tables.
b.   Using third table to store mapping between these two entities
c.    Using Common Primary Key value in both the tables.

In this post, I am going to explain how to establish One-to-One mapping using foreign key constraint.

Let’s create two tables like below.
BANK_ACCOUNT_DETAILS
ACCOUNT_ID
ACCOUNT_NUMBER
ADDRESS
BRANCH
IFSC_CODE

EMPLOYEES
EMP_ID
FIRST_NAME
LAST_NAME
ACCOUNT_ID

ACCOUNT_ID column of EMPLOYEES tables is a foreign key references to ACCOUNT_ID column of BANK_ACCOUNT_DETAILS  table.

SQL statements to get above data definition looks like below
create table bank_account_details (account_id integer not null, account_number varchar(255), address varchar(255), branch varchar(255), ifsc_code varchar(255), primary key (account_id))

create table employees (emp_id integer not null, first_name varchar(255), last_name varchar(255), account_id integer, primary key (emp_id))

alter table employees add constraint FKsjblkax5fjj3evmq8jswq7lrl foreign key (account_id) references bank_account_details

Entity classes defined like below.
@Entity
@Table(name = "employees")
public class Employee {
 @Id
 @GeneratedValue
 @Column(name = "emp_id")
 private int id;
 private String firstName;
 private String lastName;

 @OneToOne(cascade = CascadeType.ALL)
 @JoinColumn(name="account_id")
 @JsonManagedReference
 private SalaryAccount salaryAccount;

 ......
 ......
}

@Entity
@Table(name = "bank_account_details")
public class SalaryAccount {

 @Id
 @GeneratedValue
 @Column(name = "account_id")
 private int id;

 private String accountNumber;
 private String branch;
 private String ifscCode;

 private String address;

 @JsonBackReference
 @OneToOne(mappedBy = "salaryAccount")
 private Employee employee;

 ......
 ......
}
