Cognitive task require brain to process the information and generate appropriate response. In general, a cognitive task requires mental processing.
Examples of cognitive task
- Reasoning
- Perception
- Using logic to draw the conclusions
- Retrieving the information from memory
- Coming up with new ideas, innovations
- Story telling
- Pattern recognition
- Defining an execution plan to achieve a goal
- Grouping the object based on common characteristics
- Speaking new language
- Playing a musical instrument
- Remembering the birthdays of your friends.
- Planning a vacation
- Driving a vehicle etc.,
Can Machine learning handle cognitive tasks?
Machine learning can’t perform all the cognitive tasks that a human can perform, but it can able to address some cognitive tasks.
- Identifying objects: Machine can able to identify the objects in images or videos. For example, google photos use machine learning to tag the photos.
- Language translation: Can able to translate the text from one language to other.
- Machine learning algorithms can able to answer your questions in informative way.
- Machine learning models are trained to play games.
- Machine learning models can read lot of text and generate a summary out of it.
- Machine learning models can able to recommend the products, services based on user preferences.
- Self-driving cars use Machine learning
Challenges to Machine learning to address cognitive tasks
Now a days, machine learning is used everywhere to automate some cognitive tasks, but definitely it is not a replacement for human cognition.
Machine learning models need to be trained on huge amount of data and the outcomes quality is dependent on training data quality. If the training data used for Machine learning is of poor quality, then the models predictive accuracy is compromised. For example, if the data is mostly from people from age group 18 to 40, then the model may learn to discriminate against elderly people.
Can a single Machine learning model solve all cognitive tasks?
A single Machine learning model can’t solve all the cognitive tasks effectively. Each cognitive task require a different set of skills and training.
For example, self-driving cars require different set of training than preparing a delicious dish.
In general, ML models are designed to solve a specific problem like spam detection, image recognitions, product recommendations etc.,
