Apache Atlas: Glossary, category and terms

Glossary provides appropriate vocabulary to the business user. Let’s create a glossary in the UI and experiment with glossary category and term.

Login to atlas UI (http://localhost:21000/),  and navigate to GLOSSARY tab.

Click on + button to create new glossary.

Enter the name as ‘Banking and Financials, and provide some short, long description and click on Create button.

Let’s define Glossary category

Glossary category is used to organize or group the terms, so that the term's context can be enriched.

From the UI, move the slider from Terms to Category.

Click on … available at ‘Banking and Financials’ and click on ‘Create Category’ button. Create ‘Capital Market Management’ category.

Click on … available at ‘Banking and Financials’ and click on ‘Create Category’ button. Create ‘Capital Market Management’ category.

Can I define sub categories?

Yes, you can do. For example, let’s create a sub category ‘laws’ under ‘Capital Market Management’ category.

Click on … next to the ‘Capital Market Management’ category -> Create Sub-Category. In this way, you can create nested sub categories too.

Let’s define glossary terms in a category

A business glossary is a collection of data related terms, where term is some useful information to the enterprise. A term in Apache Atlas must have a unique qualifiedName, there can be term(s) with same name but they cannot belong to the same glossary.

Let’s create some terms in Finance category.

Move the slider to Terms.

Click on three … next to Banking and Financials -> Create Term.

Add some information in ‘Create Term’ window and click on Create button.

Let’s attach some category to this term.

Click on the term ‘ESA’ that we created in previous step.

Click on + button next to Categories.

Select the categories that you want to assign.

Click on + button next to Categories.

Select the categories that you want to assign.

You can confirm the same term page.

Similarly, you can attach the classification to a term. Click on + button next to Classification section.

Select the classification from available list and click on Add button. For example, I added ‘sensitive’ classification to the term ESA.

Attach the term to entities

Go to entites listing page using search console.

Click on + button under Term column.

Select the term that you want to assign to this entity and click on Assign button. That’s it, you are done….
