Springboot, quartz and MySQL: Hello world application

 In this post, I am going to explain how to integrate spring boot + MySQL + Quartz in one application.

Prerequisite

Create a MySQL database ‘demo’ and execute following sql statements against demo database.

quartz.sql

Find the below working application.

Step 1: Create new maven project ‘spring-boot-quartz-demo’.

Step 2: Update pom.xml with below dependencies.

pom.xml

<project xmlns="http://maven.apache.org/POM/4.0.0"
    xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
    xsi:schemaLocation="http://maven.apache.org/POM/4.0.0 http://maven.apache.org/xsd/maven-4.0.0.xsd">
    <modelVersion>4.0.0</modelVersion>
    <groupId>com.sample.app</groupId>
    <artifactId>spring-boot-quartz-demo</artifactId>
    <version>1</version>

    <parent>
        <groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
        <artifactId>spring-boot-starter-parent</artifactId>
        <version>2.1.6.RELEASE</version>
    </parent>

    <dependencies>

        <!-- https://mvnrepository.com/artifact/org.springframework.boot/spring-boot-starter-data-jpa -->
        <dependency>
            <groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
            <artifactId>spring-boot-starter-data-jpa</artifactId>
        </dependency>

        <dependency>
            <groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
            <artifactId>spring-boot-starter-quartz</artifactId>
        </dependency>

        <dependency>
            <groupId>mysql</groupId>
            <artifactId>mysql-connector-java</artifactId>
        </dependency>

        <dependency>
            <groupId>com.zaxxer</groupId>
            <artifactId>HikariCP</artifactId>
        </dependency>

    </dependencies>
</project>

Step 3: Update application.yml file with spring boot and quartz configuration properties.

application.yml

spring:
  profiles.active: local
---
spring:
  datasource:
    communicationtimeout: 60000
    jpa:
      hibernate:
        ddl-auto: none
    hikari:
      connection-timeout: 30000
      idle-timeout: 600000
      max-lifetime: 1800000
      maximum-pool-size: 20
  jpa:
    hibernate:
      naming:
        physical-strategy: org.hibernate.boot.model.naming.PhysicalNamingStrategyStandardImpl
    database-platform:  org.hibernate.dialect.MySQL5InnoDBDialect
---
spring:
  jpa:
    properties:
      hibernate:
        show_sql: false
        format_sql: false
---
spring:
  quartz:
    job-store-type: jdbc
    jdbc:
      initialize-schema: never
    properties:
      org:
        quartz:
          scheduler:
            instanceName: quartz-demo-app
            instanceId: AUTO
            instanceIdGenerator:
              class: com.sample.app.generators.CustomQuartzInstanceIdGenerator
          threadPool:
            threadCount: 20
          jobStore:
            class: org.quartz.impl.jdbcjobstore.JobStoreTX
            driverDelegateClass: org.quartz.impl.jdbcjobstore.StdJDBCDelegate
            useProperties: true
            misfireThreshold: 60000
            tablePrefix: qrtz_
            isClustered: true
          plugin:
            shutdownHook:
              class: org.quartz.plugins.management.ShutdownHookPlugin
              cleanShutdown: TRUE

Step 4: Create a package ‘com.sample.app.jobs’ and define WelcomeJob.

WelcomeJob.java

package com.sample.app.jobs;

import org.quartz.Job;
import org.quartz.JobExecutionContext;
import org.quartz.JobExecutionException;

public class WelcomeJob implements Job {

	@Override
	public void execute(JobExecutionContext context) throws JobExecutionException {
		System.out.println("Hello World");
	}

}

Step 5: Create a package ‘com.sample.app.config’ and define DBConfig class.

DBConfig.java

package com.sample.app.config;

import javax.sql.DataSource;

import org.springframework.context.annotation.Bean;
import org.springframework.context.annotation.Configuration;

import com.zaxxer.hikari.HikariDataSource;

@Configuration
public class DBConfig {
	@Bean
	public DataSource dataSource(){

		HikariDataSource dataSource = new HikariDataSource();
		dataSource.setDriverClassName("com.mysql.cj.jdbc.Driver");
		dataSource.setJdbcUrl("jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/demo");
		dataSource.setUsername("root");
		dataSource.setPassword("tiger");
		return dataSource;
	}
}

Step 6: Create a package ‘com.sample.app.config’ and define SchedulerConfig class.

SchedulerConfig.java

package com.sample.app.config;

import java.io.IOException;
import java.util.Properties;

import javax.sql.DataSource;

import org.springframework.beans.factory.annotation.Autowired;
import org.springframework.boot.autoconfigure.quartz.QuartzProperties;
import org.springframework.context.annotation.Bean;
import org.springframework.context.annotation.Configuration;
import org.springframework.scheduling.quartz.SchedulerFactoryBean;

@Configuration
public class SchedulerConfig {

	@Autowired
	private DataSource dataSource;

	@Autowired
	private QuartzProperties quartzProperties;

	@Bean
    public SchedulerFactoryBean schedulerFactoryBean() throws IOException {

        SchedulerFactoryBean factory = new SchedulerFactoryBean();
        factory.setOverwriteExistingJobs(true);
        factory.setDataSource(dataSource);

        Properties properties = new Properties();
        properties.putAll(quartzProperties.getProperties());

        factory.setQuartzProperties(properties);

        return factory;
    }
}

Step 7: Create a package ‘com.sample.app’ and define App class.

App.java

package com.sample.app;

import java.util.Date;

import org.quartz.Scheduler;
import org.quartz.impl.JobDetailImpl;
import org.quartz.impl.triggers.CronTriggerImpl;
import org.springframework.beans.factory.annotation.Autowired;
import org.springframework.boot.CommandLineRunner;
import org.springframework.boot.SpringApplication;
import org.springframework.boot.autoconfigure.SpringBootApplication;
import org.springframework.context.annotation.Bean;

import com.sample.app.jobs.WelcomeJob;

@SpringBootApplication
public class App {

    @Autowired
    private Scheduler scheduler;

    public static void main(String args[]) {
        SpringApplication.run(App.class, args);
    }

    @Bean
    public CommandLineRunner demo() {
        return (args) -> {

            scheduler.clear();

            JobDetailImpl jobDetail = new JobDetailImpl();
            jobDetail.setName("First Job");
            jobDetail.setJobClass(WelcomeJob.class);
            jobDetail.setDescription("Simple Task Application");
            jobDetail.setRequestsRecovery(true);
            jobDetail.setDurability(true);

            CronTriggerImpl cronTrigger1 = new CronTriggerImpl();
            cronTrigger1.setStartTime(new Date(System.currentTimeMillis() + 1000));
            cronTrigger1.setCronExpression("0/3 * * * * ?");
            cronTrigger1.setName("FirstTrigger");
            cronTrigger1.setDescription("Simple Trigger");

            scheduler.scheduleJob(jobDetail, cronTrigger1);

        };
    }
}

Step 8: Create a package ‘com.sample.app.generators’ and define CustomQuartzInstanceIdGenerator class.

CustomQuartzInstanceIdGenerator.java

package com.sample.app.generators;

import java.util.UUID;

import org.quartz.SchedulerException;
import org.quartz.spi.InstanceIdGenerator;

public class CustomQuartzInstanceIdGenerator implements InstanceIdGenerator {

  @Override
  public String generateInstanceId() throws SchedulerException {
    try {
      return UUID.randomUUID().toString();
    } catch (Exception ex) {
      throw new RuntimeException(ex);
    }
  }

}

Total project structure looks like below.

Run App.java, you will see ‘Hello World’ messages in console.

You can download complete working application from below link.

https://github.com/harikrishna553/springboot/tree/master/quartz/spring-boot-quartz-demo

Drawback of this application

Since I am not modelled the jobs as spring components, they can’t access spring managed beans. To do this we need to make our quartz jobs spring aware. I will explain how to do this in my next post.
