Spring boot: quartz: Add, delete jobs dynamically

In this post, I am going to explain how to add and delete jobs dynamically.

Prerequisite

Create a MySQL database 'demo' and execute following sql statements against demo database.

Follow below step-by-step procedure to build complete working application.

Step 1: Create new maven project ‘dynamic_job-create-delete’.

Step 2: Update pom.xml with maven dependencies.

pom.xml

<project xmlns="http://maven.apache.org/POM/4.0.0"
    xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
    xsi:schemaLocation="http://maven.apache.org/POM/4.0.0 http://maven.apache.org/xsd/maven-4.0.0.xsd">
    <modelVersion>4.0.0</modelVersion>
    <groupId>com.sample.app</groupId>
    <artifactId>dynamic_job-create-delete</artifactId>
    <version>1</version>

    <parent>
        <groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
        <artifactId>spring-boot-starter-parent</artifactId>
        <version>2.1.6.RELEASE</version>
    </parent>

    <dependencies>

        <!-- https://mvnrepository.com/artifact/org.springframework.boot/spring-boot-starter-data-jpa -->
        <dependency>
            <groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
            <artifactId>spring-boot-starter-data-jpa</artifactId>
        </dependency>

        <dependency>
            <groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
            <artifactId>spring-boot-starter-quartz</artifactId>
        </dependency>

        <dependency>
            <groupId>mysql</groupId>
            <artifactId>mysql-connector-java</artifactId>
        </dependency>

        <dependency>
            <groupId>com.zaxxer</groupId>
            <artifactId>HikariCP</artifactId>
        </dependency>

        <dependency>
            <groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
            <artifactId>spring-boot-starter-web</artifactId>
        </dependency>

        <dependency>
            <groupId>io.springfox</groupId>
            <artifactId>springfox-swagger2</artifactId>
            <version>2.9.2</version>
        </dependency>

        <dependency>
            <groupId>io.springfox</groupId>
            <artifactId>springfox-swagger-ui</artifactId>
            <version>2.9.2</version>
        </dependency>

    </dependencies>
</project>

Step 3: Create application.yml file under src/main/resources folder.

application.yml

            misfireThreshold: 60000
            tablePrefix: qrtz_
            isClustered: true
          plugin:
            shutdownHook:
              class: org.quartz.plugins.management.ShutdownHookPlugin
              cleanShutdown: TRUE

Step 4: Create a package ‘com.sample.app.util’ and define TimerUtil class.

TimerUtil.java

package com.sample.app.util;

import java.util.Date;

import org.springframework.stereotype.Component;

@Component
public class TimerUtil {

  public Date getDate() {
    return new Date();
  }

}

Step 5: Create a package ‘com.sample.app.model’ and define JobRequestDto class.

JobRequestDto.java

package com.sample.app.model;

import javax.validation.constraints.NotNull;

public class JobRequestDto {

  @NotNull
  private String jobName;

  @NotNull
  private String jobDescription;

  @NotNull
  private String cronExpression;

  public String getJobName() {
    return jobName;
  }

  public void setJobName(String jobName) {
    this.jobName = jobName;
  }

  public String getJobDescription() {
    return jobDescription;
  }

  public void setJobDescription(String jobDescription) {
    this.jobDescription = jobDescription;
  }

  public String getCronExpression() {
    return cronExpression;
  }

  public void setCronExpression(String cronExpression) {
    this.cronExpression = cronExpression;
  }

}

Step 6: Create a package ‘com.sample.app.jobs’ and define WelcomeJob class.

WelcomeJob.java

package com.sample.app.jobs;

import org.quartz.JobExecutionContext;
import org.quartz.JobExecutionException;
import org.springframework.beans.factory.annotation.Autowired;
import org.springframework.scheduling.quartz.QuartzJobBean;

import com.sample.app.util.TimerUtil;

public class WelcomeJob extends QuartzJobBean {

  @Autowired
  private TimerUtil timerUtil;

  @Override
  protected void executeInternal(JobExecutionContext context) throws JobExecutionException {
    String jobKeyName = context.getJobDetail().getKey().getName();

    System.out.println(timerUtil.getDate() + " -> " + jobKeyName + " -> Hello World");
  }

}

Step 7: Create a package ‘com.sample.app.generators’ and define CustomQuartzInstanceIdGenerator class.

CustomQuartzInstanceIdGenerator.java

package com.sample.app.generators;

import java.util.UUID;

import org.quartz.SchedulerException;
import org.quartz.spi.InstanceIdGenerator;

public class CustomQuartzInstanceIdGenerator implements InstanceIdGenerator {

  @Override
  public String generateInstanceId() throws SchedulerException {
    try {
      return UUID.randomUUID().toString();
    } catch (Exception ex) {
      throw new RuntimeException(ex);
    }
  }

}

Step 8: Create a package ‘com.sample.app.config’ and define ApplicationContextHolder, DBConfig, SchedulerConfig, SwaggerConfig classes.

ApplicationContextHolder.java

package com.sample.app.config;

import org.quartz.spi.TriggerFiredBundle;
import org.springframework.beans.BeansException;
import org.springframework.beans.factory.config.AutowireCapableBeanFactory;

  private static ApplicationContext context;

  private transient AutowireCapableBeanFactory beanFactory;

  @Override
  public void setApplicationContext(ApplicationContext ctx) throws BeansException {
    beanFactory = ctx.getAutowireCapableBeanFactory();
    context = ctx;
  }

  @Override
  protected Object createJobInstance(final TriggerFiredBundle bundle) throws Exception {
    final Object job = super.createJobInstance(bundle);
    beanFactory.autowireBean(job);
    return job;
  }

  public static ApplicationContext getContext() {
    return context;
  }
}

DBConfig.java

package com.sample.app.config;

import javax.sql.DataSource;

import org.springframework.context.annotation.Bean;
import org.springframework.context.annotation.Configuration;

import com.zaxxer.hikari.HikariDataSource;

@Configuration
public class DBConfig {

    HikariDataSource dataSource = new HikariDataSource();
    dataSource.setDriverClassName("com.mysql.cj.jdbc.Driver");
    dataSource.setJdbcUrl("jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/demo");
    dataSource.setUsername("root");
    dataSource.setPassword("tiger");
    return dataSource;
  }
}

SchedulerConfig.java

package com.sample.app.config;

import java.io.IOException;
import java.util.Properties;

import javax.sql.DataSource;

import org.quartz.spi.JobFactory;
import org.springframework.beans.factory.annotation.Autowired;
import org.springframework.boot.autoconfigure.quartz.QuartzProperties;
import org.springframework.context.ApplicationContext;
import org.springframework.context.annotation.Bean;
import org.springframework.context.annotation.Configuration;
import org.springframework.scheduling.quartz.SchedulerFactoryBean;

@Configuration
public class SchedulerConfig {

  @Autowired
  private DataSource dataSource;

  @Autowired
  private QuartzProperties quartzProperties;

  @Autowired
  private ApplicationContext applicationContext;

  @Bean
  public JobFactory jobFactory() {
    ApplicationContextHolder jobFactory = new ApplicationContextHolder();
    jobFactory.setApplicationContext(applicationContext);
    return jobFactory;
  }

  @Bean
  public SchedulerFactoryBean schedulerFactoryBean() throws IOException {

    SchedulerFactoryBean factory = new SchedulerFactoryBean();
    factory.setOverwriteExistingJobs(true);
    factory.setDataSource(dataSource);
    factory.setJobFactory(jobFactory());

    Properties properties = new Properties();
    properties.putAll(quartzProperties.getProperties());

    factory.setQuartzProperties(properties);

    return factory;
  }
}

SwaggerConfig.java

package com.sample.app.config;

import org.springframework.boot.autoconfigure.EnableAutoConfiguration;
import org.springframework.context.annotation.Bean;
import org.springframework.stereotype.Component;

import springfox.documentation.builders.ApiInfoBuilder;
import springfox.documentation.builders.PathSelectors;
import springfox.documentation.builders.RequestHandlerSelectors;
import springfox.documentation.service.ApiInfo;
import springfox.documentation.spi.DocumentationType;
import springfox.documentation.spring.web.plugins.Docket;
import springfox.documentation.swagger2.annotations.EnableSwagger2;

@Component
@EnableAutoConfiguration
@EnableSwagger2
public class SwaggerConfig {

  @Bean
  public Docket userApi() {

    return new Docket(DocumentationType.SWAGGER_2).apiInfo(apiInfo()).select().paths(PathSelectors.any())
        .apis(RequestHandlerSelectors.basePackage("com.sample.app.controller")).build();
  }

  private ApiInfo apiInfo() {

    return new ApiInfoBuilder().title("Query builder").description("Query builder using spring specification")
        .version("2.0").build();
  }
}

Step 9: Create a package ‘com.sample.app.controller’ and define JobController class.

JobController.java

package com.sample.app.controller;

import java.text.ParseException;
import java.util.Date;

import javax.validation.Valid;

import org.quartz.JobKey;
import org.quartz.Scheduler;
import org.quartz.SchedulerException;
import org.quartz.impl.JobDetailImpl;
import org.quartz.impl.triggers.CronTriggerImpl;
import org.springframework.beans.factory.annotation.Autowired;
import org.springframework.http.HttpStatus;
import org.springframework.http.ResponseEntity;
import org.springframework.web.bind.annotation.RequestBody;
import org.springframework.web.bind.annotation.RequestMapping;
import org.springframework.web.bind.annotation.RequestMethod;
import org.springframework.web.bind.annotation.RequestParam;
import org.springframework.web.bind.annotation.RestController;

import com.sample.app.jobs.WelcomeJob;
import com.sample.app.model.JobRequestDto;

import io.swagger.annotations.Api;
import io.swagger.annotations.ApiOperation;

@RestController
@RequestMapping("api/v1/jobs")
@Api(tags = { "This section contains all Jobs Speicifc Operations" })
public class JobController {

  @Autowired
  private Scheduler scheduler;

  @RequestMapping(method = RequestMethod.POST)
  @ApiOperation(value = "Create new job", notes = "Create new job")
  public ResponseEntity<Date> create(@RequestBody @Valid JobRequestDto jobRequestDto)
      throws ParseException, SchedulerException {

    JobDetailImpl jobDetail1 = new JobDetailImpl();
    jobDetail1.setName(jobRequestDto.getJobName());
    jobDetail1.setJobClass(WelcomeJob.class);
    jobDetail1.setDescription(jobRequestDto.getJobDescription());
    jobDetail1.setRequestsRecovery(true);
    jobDetail1.setDurability(true);
    jobDetail1.setKey(new JobKey(jobRequestDto.getJobName()));

    CronTriggerImpl cronTrigger1 = new CronTriggerImpl();
    cronTrigger1.setStartTime(new Date(System.currentTimeMillis() + 1000));
    cronTrigger1.setCronExpression(jobRequestDto.getCronExpression());
    cronTrigger1.setName(jobRequestDto.getJobName());
    cronTrigger1.setDescription(jobRequestDto.getJobDescription());

    Date date = scheduler.scheduleJob(jobDetail1, cronTrigger1);

    return ResponseEntity.status(HttpStatus.CREATED).body(date);

  }

  @ApiOperation(value = "Delete a job", notes = "Delete a job")
  @RequestMapping(method = RequestMethod.DELETE)
  public ResponseEntity<Boolean> delete(@RequestParam(name = "jobName", required = true) String jobName)
      throws SchedulerException {

    JobKey jobKey = new JobKey(jobName);
    Boolean isJobDeleted = scheduler.deleteJob(jobKey);
    return ResponseEntity.status(HttpStatus.OK).body(isJobDeleted);

  }

}

Step 10: Create a package ‘com.sample.app’ and define App class.

App.java

package com.sample.app;

import javax.annotation.PostConstruct;

import org.quartz.Scheduler;
import org.quartz.SchedulerException;
import org.springframework.beans.factory.annotation.Autowired;
import org.springframework.boot.SpringApplication;
import org.springframework.boot.autoconfigure.SpringBootApplication;

@SpringBootApplication
public class App {

  @Autowired
  private Scheduler scheduler;

  public static void main(String args[]) {
    SpringApplication.run(App.class, args);
  }

  @PostConstruct
  public void clean() throws SchedulerException {
    // This will delete all the existing jobs on every new run of the application,
    // you can comment this based on your needs
    scheduler.clear();
  }

}

Total project structure looks like below.

Run App.java.

Open the url ‘http://localhost:1234/swagger-ui.html’ in browser, you will see the swagger ui to experiment with the application.

Try the POST /api/v1/jobs endpoint with following request payload.

{

  "cronExpression": "0/3 * * * * ?",

  "jobDescription": "Job1",

  "jobName": "Job1"

}

Once the job gets created, you will see following messages for every three seconds.

Sun Mar 07 09:54:15 IST 2021 -> Job1 -> Hello World
Sun Mar 07 09:54:18 IST 2021 -> Job1 -> Hello World
Sun Mar 07 09:54:21 IST 2021 -> Job1 -> Hello World

Sun Mar 07 09:54:27 IST 2021 -> Job1 -> Hello World
Sun Mar 07 09:54:30 IST 2021 -> Job1 -> Hello World
Sun Mar 07 09:54:33 IST 2021 -> Job1 -> Hello World
Sun Mar 07 09:54:36 IST 2021 -> Job1 -> Hello World

  1. In my case , job triggered twice, I solved the problem using below settings.

    Step 1: Adding DisallowConcurrentExecution annotaiton
    @DisallowConcurrentExecution
    public class MonitorAndAlertJob extends QuartzJobBean {

    }
