Spring boot jdbc: Insert and return the key


'executeAndReturnKey' method of 'SimpleJdbcInsert' class is used to insert new entity to table and return the key associated with it.

Step 1: Instantiate SimpleJdbcInsert object.
SimpleJdbcInsert simpleJdbcInsert = new SimpleJdbcInsert(jdbcTemplate);

Step 2: Specify table name and column names.
List<String> columns = Arrays.asList("first_name", "last_name");

simpleJdbcInsert.setTableName("employees");
simpleJdbcInsert.setColumnNames(columns);

Step 3: Specify generated key name.
simpleJdbcInsert.setGeneratedKeyName("id");

Step 4: Populate data.
Map<String, Object> data = new HashMap<>();
data.put("first_name", emp.getFirstName());
data.put("last_name", emp.getLastName());

Step 5: Call ‘executeAndReturnKey’ method by passing the data.
int id = (Integer) simpleJdbcInsert.executeAndReturnKey(data);
